Modern Hinterland released their Americana tinged ‘The Hoppings’ on 21 September via Label Fandango. The album takes its name from the annual summer fairground on Newcastle Town Moor, was inspired by songwriter and vocalist Chris Hornsby’s growing up in the hills and valleys outside of Newcastle and travelling the length and breadth of the UK.
As part of preparing for the record, Hornsby listened to 365 albums over 365 days in an attempt to distil what makes a great album. The album which spans 10 songs over 32 minutes is brief but packed with visions of modern life.
For their latest video, they head to London…Watch The Girl Just South of Hackney on which Chris shared the following:
For this video we wanted to reference some of the storytelling of the song and find some locations in the right area – I always had in my head that it was someone recounting the story, maybe to a mate in a pub, so it starts off in the George and Vulture, Hoxton. When Andy Willsher, who directed the video, asked the band to look bored while I sang the tale to them, I thought they’d be really stretching their acting skills… but somehow it came naturally to them…
You can catch Modern Hinterland performing live on Wednesday 7th November 2018 at Servant Jazz Quarters (details below).
