Award-winning English folk trio and Folk Radio UK favourites Lady Maisery (Hannah James, Rowan Rheingans and Hazel Askew) have announced that they will be heading out on the road this December for 9 special gigs in collaboration with another all-time favourite of ours: folk duo Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith.
The tour which is titled AWAKE ARISE – A CHRISTMAS SHOW FOR OUR TIMES celebrates the riches of our varied winter traditions and reflects upon the hope and resilience in music and song that can bring joy to us all in the darkest season.
Lady Maisery were our Artists of the Month following the release of their 2016 release Cycle which Thomas Blake concluded was
“…without doubt, an album stuffed full of formidable singing and excellent musicianship. But more than this, it is an album that has something to say about today’s world and is aware of its place in history. Lady Maisery are unafraid to challenge preconceptions about folk music but are aware of its cultural significance and its historical imperative. This album proves that they are worthy custodians and spirited agitators.”
The pairing with Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith is well suited as both have a track record which shows a strong awareness of the struggles and hopes faced by many today. Their latest album Many A Thousand was released in August and was selected as a Featured Album of the Month. In his review, Thomas concluded
“Many A Thousand is, despite its many moments of protest and righteous anger, an album full of hope, and this ending – a dawn chorus, the beginning of a bright new day – is the most hopeful part of all. Aldridge and Goldsmith have created a record whose songs are immediate and politically necessary, and whose melodies will remain in the memory for years to come.”
Together they invite you to join them for an evening of galvanising songs for the wintertime, drawing on a variety of winter traditions from rousing folk carols to more contemplative and hopeful music to brighten the darkest season. Sounds perfect!
