Gigspanner are on the road again and the good news is that those of you who managed to miss the expanded lineup of The Gigspanner Big Band featuring Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin (Edgelarks) will have another opportunity to catch them as they play four more dates in November. Last year, Peter Knight’s Gigspanner Big Band released a superb live album which was one of our Featured Albums of the Month. In his review of that album Thomas Blake declared:
The Gigspanner Big Band are a unique musical proposition; they are taking folk music down new and enthralling paths. They are also one of the most exciting live bands you are likely to see this year (or any year, for that matter), and this recording documents their energy, skill and hard work brilliantly.
There you go…what more evidence do you need to persuade you to go and see them live? The Gigspanner trio are also a unique and exciting proposition who released The Wife of Urban Law last year which was also a Featured Album of the Month leading Thomas to again sing their praises:
Peter Knight has assembled one of the most quietly brilliant sets of musicians in the folk world and beyond.
One of my favourite tunes from that album was Urban Reel for which Perrine Nouvier has created a new video you can watch below. Perrine’s unusual and distinctive films have become synonymous with Gigspanner’s music. She has written that this one was inspired by Velvet Underground’s ‘What Goes On’ video, fusing a documentary style of footage with flashing imagery. It was filmed in the Salle de Fetes in the village of St Pierre Cherignat in France last month.
Also, thanks to Shrewsbury Folk Festival you can also watch the entire Gigspanner Big Band’s set from this year’s festival below:
