At the beginning of this year, we were eager to share with you the debut album from Irish folk chanteuse/harpist and producer Brona McVittie (The London Lasses, Rún, littlebow). As well as being a Featured Album of the Month (reviewed here), it also received glowing reviews from titles such as The Guardian, Uncut, Mojo and The Independent, and various tracks from the album have been broadcast in the UK by luminaries such as Lauren Laverne and Gideon Coe on BBC 6Music, Lynette Fay and Eve Blair on BBC Radio Ulster, and internationally in Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Australia, the USA and Canada.
In the run-up to Brona’s forthcoming winter tour of cities in the UK and Ireland, including 5th December in London at Kings Place, she is releasing a brand new video for Under The Pines, the album’s lead single which Lauren Laverne included in her best of 2018 so far picks. This new work captures the mood of the song through an abstract narrative that echoes the duality of Brona’s work, her fascination with the juxtaposition of synthetic against natural, musically inherent in the understated electronica she threads through the warmth of violin, viola, cello, harp, trumpet, flute, slide-guitar and her characteristic layered vocals.
One of the most distinctive debuts you are likely to hear all year. Thomas Blake, Folk Radio UK.
