Folk singer-songwriter Kirsty Merryn comes to the Fisher Theatre in Bungay, Suffolk on Friday 31st August, and the Guildhall Norwich on 18th October as a part of her first ever solo tour of the UK.
The tour follows Kirsty’s show-stopping performances opening for folk legends Show of Hands on their 22-night tour of UK cathedrals, playing to nearly 14,000 people along the way.
Kirsty’s debut album “She & I” (reviewed here) is a collection of stories about women from history, from local legend Admiral Nelson’s mistress Emma Lady Hamilton, to Annie Edson Taylor, the first person to go over Niagara falls in a barrel. “She & I” released in November 2017 and received a fantastic reception, reaching Number 3 in the Amazon Folk Bestsellers download chart, garnering national and local airplay as well as reviews in the Guardian, the Sunday Express and many more.
Beguiling and mercurial, Kirsty’s music is heavily anchored in the folk tradition with jazz and classical backwaters. But her influences have a much wider reach, ranging from Cara Dillon to Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush – emphatic piano-based songs with sharply observed lyrics – packaged with panache in elegant – beautifully balanced settings and delivered with crystal clear, assured vocals.
Kirsty said: “I’m really excited to come and perform at the beautiful and historic Fisher Theatre in Bungay, and Guildhall in Norwich. The area has a rich history of folk music, and I am happy to follow in the footsteps of many fantastic folk singers in performing here. The Fisher Theatre was originally built to entertain Georgian audiences in the early 1800’s, but fell out of favour and was sold in the mid-century. After being used for various purposes, it was restored by a local group of residents who were keen to establish an Arts Centre in the 1990’s and today is a beautiful and vibrant local hub. I can’t wait to perform there. I’m really looking forward to telling the story of Emma Hamilton and her lover Nelson to his home crowd.”
Tickets to the Fisher Theatre cost £12 for adults of £10 for concessions and are available here www.fishertheatre.org.
