House and Land, comprised of Sarah Louise (whose solo album Deeper Woods we recently reviewed here) and Sally Anne Morgan of Black Twig Pickers bring a refreshing take on Appalachian folk and roots music. As we recently announced, they are on tour in the UK right now and are appearing in Todmorden tonight followed by dates in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London’s Cafe Oto before heading over to Denmark for the fabulous Fanø Free Folk Fest.
Watch their new video for Rainbow ‘mid Life’s Willows which was filmed by Jesse Sheppard of Elkhorn. It’s also our Song of the Day.
Utterly transfixing to watch live, House and Land perform their music in its purest form – without amplifiers, using just two sets of hands and voices to craft intricate compositions. With a minimalist approach, their songs consider the space between notes as much as the notes themselves. The material on their debut is drawn from traditional southern hymns and Appalachian ballads that originated in England and elsewhere hundreds of years ago, arranged by two artists with an extensive knowledge of the form and filtered through their own feminist perspectives.
