August 31st will see the release of Dan Webster’s fourth studio album entitled Devil Sky, a beautifully produced ten track album. ‘Playing cards in Late Night Bars’ is the opening track which catches up on the protagonists ‘Billy’ and ‘Stevie’ from ‘Playing cards’, the last track on his 2008 release Diamond Land.
The track has an upbeat summer single feel, featuring a punchy folk tune weaved into the Americana sounding track, typical of Webster’s conduit relationship with the two styles. Underneath the summer fun lies the bitter-sweetness of the final parting of old friends reliving the old days one last time and of lives on the mend but still very much changed.
Dan Webster produces and provides vocals and acoustic guitar. Polly Bolton is on Mandolin, Emily Lawler on fiddle and vocals, Rachel Brown on cello, Mark Waters on bass and Liam Hardy on drums. The track also features guest performances from Stuart Allan on electric guitar and Evie Rapson on vocals.
The video was shot in ‘Sutlers’ York during a normal Wednesday night in the bar.
DEVIL SKY will be released on the 31st of August.
