When the band members of New York’s The Rad Trads are not playing together they are out there performing in numerous other bands which have included St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Deer Tick, Sarah Jarosz, Buck Meek & Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief, Lee Fields & the Expressions, David Duchovny, and Christopher Paul Stelling.
Their new album On Tap finds them exploring new territory complemented by horns, psychedelic guitars as well as acoustic arrangements. Check out their video for their lead single Good Luck Unto Ya. The song explores the pain and relief of cutting ties with a toxic person. Drummer John Fatum sings “Hallelujah, good luck unto ya, no need to shake my hand, no need to cry.” The emotional catharsis of the text is mirrored in the production of the song with a wall of sound of over 60 overdubbed tracks.
Seeing a Roller Disco in this day and age may seem like a blast from the past for many although I’m guessing this video was maybe inspired by The Crazy Legs Skate Club started by Lezly Ziering in Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, NY where the video was filmed. The club ran weekly (in a gymnasium of a salvation army building) and attracted many people from all walks of life from the local area and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The band is currently finishing up the first leg of their extensive US run, which included select shows with Lake Street Dive, and they’ll kick off the next run of national dates, throughout September and early October, with their On Tap LP release show on Friday, September 14th at Mercury Lounge. In mid-October, the band heads to Spain, for a run of 10 dates throughout the country. See below for details on their tour.
Over the summer the band toured 32 states, performing 31 shows in 42 days, travelling an impressive 13,000 miles. Audiences ranged from 3000 to just 9 and along the way they’ve contended with several tour van teething issues including breaking down in the middle of nowhere in Arizona on a 106-degree afternoon.
On Tap is release on September 14th, Pre-Order here: here
