Taking their name from the Northumbrian name for twilight, The Darkening is one of the latest projects from Northumbrian Piper and fiddle player Kathryn Tickell.
The band features Cormac Byrne on percussion, Joe Truswell on drums and programming, Kate Young on fiddle and vocals, Amy Thatcher on accordion and vocals and finally Kieran Szifris on octave mandolin.
The description of their music is very tantalizing – Musicians from Northumberland, Scotland, Ireland and England invoke the dark, powerful, shamanic sounds of Ancient Northumbria and broadcast them to the modern world.
Their inspiration comes from the wild, dramatic, weather-bitten countryside along Hadrian’s Wall, which seems so quintessentially Northumbrian…and yet, almost 2000 years ago that same landscape was inhabited by people from around the world, worshipping different gods and following different customs.
BBC Taster (a new trial service which you can read about here) were on hand at the recent Get North 2018 festival to capture them in concert…they lived up to and went beyond expectations.
They are sure to be one of the many favourites at this year’s Sidmouth FolkWeek 2018 (3-10 August).
