London based pianist & songwriter Joseph Lawrenson will be releasing his debut solo EP ‘I’ll Never Be Young Again’ on 27th July 2018 via Hide & Seek Records, the home of his old band, the acclaimed Leeds quintet Dancing Years.
The Leeds born songwriter found himself in rural Australia last year working behind a bar in a Tapas restaurant after his previous project Dancing Years came to an end with a series of sold out and emotional headline shows in Leeds & London.
After hitting the reset button and landing in Australia he got to work with old friends and tour mates Dave Symses and Tim Hart of Aussie folk-rock heroes Boy & Bear: “I set myself the challenge to write concise & emotional pop songs” explains Lawrenson. They then recorded the EP in Sydney – “We had a blast! Working alongside such studio veterans really raised the level, I learnt a lot from those guys.”
The theme of travel, fresh starts and upheaval runs through ‘I’ll Never Be Young Again’,“The EP is named after Daphne du Marrier’s terrible first novel, for which I have a soft spot… at the time I read it, it perfectly summed up the restlessness, naivety, hopefulness and discontent of being young. And I suppose the title serves as a sort of mantra to myself, in deciding not to be like that anymore.”
I’ll Never Be Young Again’ was recorded & produced by Richard Belkner & Dave Symes in Sydney at Free Energy Device Studio (Angus & Julia Stone, Neil Finn of Crowded House) and finished in Leeds with old friend and collaborator James Kenosha (Rhodes, Dry The River).
He told us that 6am In June, his new single, is about “waking up early and going for a walk in the countryside. Picture blue skies and bright sun. You know those mornings in early summer, when waking up is a simple pleasure…”
