Based out of NYC and Santa Fe, singer songwriter Liv Lombardi continues to build her dedicated fan-base with her soulful, androgynous and sultry vocals through her radically honest stylings. Her ever-growing body of work invites listeners to engage in an intimate, vulnerable and empowering story of life lived with an open heart.
Liv released her third studio album “Freedom Girl” in October 2017. A pop-heavy evolution with similar folk roots, Freedom Girl developed into a more direct and universal story than that of the internal representation of her previous two albums. The title track was originally inspired by a chance meeting with a perfect stranger in Budapest, Hungary, Lombardi explains about a 2013 trek across Europe with nothing but a backpack and a guitar.
Freedom Girl was shot in the Haizhu District of Guangzhou, China, during the Chinese New Year Flower Festival and brings to life the cover and protagonist of Liv Lombardi’s Freedom Girl EP, which came out last year. The vid has an additional unusual layer of interest in that the ‘singer’ is actually Liv’s identical twin sister, Ariana, who lives and works in China.
Liv shared the following on the video:
“The video for “Freedom Girl” and how it came to be, I believe, really embodies everything this song and album is about. “Freedom Girl” was written after five months of solo travels in Europe, playing music for people across the globe from my home. The experiences that inspired the song and album as a whole had a great deal to do with the joy and possibility that came along with surrendering my life to the unknown, letting adventure and the knowledge of love take me where I needed to go.
This past winter, I had been chatting with Rowley, the video director and my identical twin sister Ari, while they were both in China, telling them I wanted to make a video for “Freedom Girl” but that I didn’t think I could swing it on my own, having been only a few weeks away from the upcoming tour. Rowley and Ari immediately stepped in and said they had time that week and a few ideas to play with while the Chinese New Year was taking place in Guangzhou. I had collaborated with them in the Fall of 2016 while visiting China so I knew that if I let them take the idea and run, something special would follow.
Liv’s sister Ari added:
I felt it was very serendipitous that I was “Freedom Girl” in the music video because I myself had moved to China (of all places) and discovered myself and come into my own as an artist and a writer. Singing the lyrics in the city where I came into my own, felt like a proclamation. Rowley is a great director so he was able to get me to really embody the feelings I have when I listen to Liv’s music.
