Gentrification: The process by which a place, especially part of a city, changes from being a poor area to a richer one, where people from a higher social class live: (Cambridge Dictionary).
Last week we shared a video by Tom Bright for his new single Tsunami of Suits which tackled gentrification in London.
“When I moved to London in 2013, I started working at The English Restaurant on Old Spitalfield Market. I caught the area just as they started the major gentrification job on it. Before I knew it, there was not only one, but two Pizza Expresses either end of the beautiful Brushfield Street, and it went further downhill from there. My mate Mark had a cracking boozer called ‘The Gun’ (where we used to rehearse upstairs) – that’s now been flattened and is about to be a part of some shopping centre…”
Gentrification is by no means just a UK issue as shown in Mulberry, a short film by Paul Stone which had its world premiere at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. The focus is brought to a small section of Manhattan where the rich and famous have chosen to live…
A deeply personal film about the people and the neighbourhood I have lived in for more than half my life. The film explores how the forces of hyper-gentrification and greed are attempting to force out the working class native New Yorkers that made this small section of Manhattan so special.
