We first came across Dorset-born Roo Panes in 2012 just prior to the release of his EP ‘Know Me Well’. Fast forward six years and he’s about to release his third album ‘Quiet Man’ (5 June via CRC Records) supported by two headline dates at Bristol’s Colston Hall and London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire (dates below).
He recently released the ‘My Sweet Refuge’, a whispery and delicate single whose gentle piano opening and female backing briefly call to mind the gentle sweeping magic of Nick Drake before building into what is sure to be a much-desired indie-folk number that will brighten many playlists. The song carries the album’s hallmarks which convey “a place of stillness, peace and contentment” – something that connects well with the image of the artist above – it doesn’t take much imagination (or maybe just a vivid imagination) to place him from what is probably a farm outbuilding in the South West to being stood inside the cottage featured on the cover of Vashti Bunyan’s Just Another Diamond Day (which recently got a UK vinyl pressing). Whilst preferring to let the listener interpret his songs Roo has described Quiet Man as having “a general theme of encouragement”, always a good thing in my book.
