With its snowy theme, this new video for Another Phase in History from Twelfth Day, who are on tour this month (see dates below), seems like perfect timing although it has a far deeper meaning as they explained.
“Another Phase in History was written for our friend Maya Youssef – the wonderful Syrian Kanun player with whom we had the privilege of performing at the Bath International Festival in 2016. When we first met up to talk about our collaboration, the conversation turned to the war in Syria and Maya’s family there. We were moved and inspired by her incredible strength, passion and resilience, and asked how she was able to cope with not being able to visit her family and homeland at her will. She said the only way, was to see the war as ‘Another Phase in History’.”

“The video was inspired by the feeling of the tune and the concept behind it. I mirrored the reflective nature of the melody by using a personal narrative following two ancestors walking the same path at different points in time. As they walk, both are remembering the past and thinking of the future. We got really lucky with the weather as the wind and snow really emphasised the idea that the Earth we live on is affected by the atrocities caused by humans throughout history but will always outlast us as individuals. The idea was to have a more positive message too, where the man is in tune with his surroundings, has respect for the nature around him and knows that the two will forever be connected.”
