I was completely blown away by Rachel Newton and her band’s performance on BBC Radio Scotland’s Quay Sessions this week (hosted by Roddy Hart). Watch her performing the murder ballad The Bloody Gardener below which featured on her last album Here’s My Heart Come take It (reviewed here). She’s up there with the best when it comes to re-interpretation of traditional music – always refreshing and innovative.
Rachel is currently on the road as part of another innovative band of players – the wonderful Furrow Collective (Lucy Farrell, Rachel Newton, Emily Portman and Alastair Roberts). Their 2016 album Wild Hog (Hudson Records) was chosen by Thomas Blake as one of his Top 10 albums of that year declaring it “the best collection of traditional music of the year. Indeed, Wild Hog was one of the best albums in any genre, proof that folk music can look to the future while embracing old forms.”
