Our Song of the Day comes from New England-based string and vocal trio Low Lily featuring Liz Simmons on vocals and guitar, Flynn Cohen on vocals, guitar and mandolin, and Lissa Schneckenburger on vocals and fiddle. We became fans of the trio back in 2015 when we premiered the title track of their debut EP All Roads Lead to You.
The good news is that they are back with a new full-length album entitled “10,000 Days Like These,” set to be released on March 16th, 2018. As we mentioned a while back, their musical influences follow a wide range of traditional music styles as they so ably demonstrate on their new album. Take a listen to the opening track below which many of you may be familiar with, it’s the traditional English song Sovay made popular by a wide range of players including Martin Carthy, Anne Briggs and James Yorkston. In this track, the trio are joined by Corey DiMario on bass and Stefan Amidon on drums. Their contemporary interpretation is refreshing and uplifting – in short, it’s an absolute stunner. So naturally, when Liz Simmons offered me a choice of tracks to premiere I found this one impossible to resist. Liz shared the following on the song:
“In reimagining our version of the English song “Sovay”, we adapted it to sound like a “naturalized ballad”, as if it had come over to the states hundreds of years ago (as so many traditional songs have), and taken on a flavor incorporating the sounds of blues and old time.”
