The opening of the film High Fidelity finds John Cusack wondering what came first…the music or the misery. He ponders on the thousands of pop songs that kids grow up listening to covering heartbreak, pain, misery and loss and hints that this is maybe what parents should be really worried about and maybe pop music is really the root of all misery. This is all before he reveals his top 5 list of break-up songs straight after his girlfriend walks out the door.
The reason this sprang to mind is the opening line of introduction I received from Austin label Keeled Scales (Moses Nesh, Real Live Tigers) to their new signing – Sun June was that they make ‘regret pop’ and that their forthcoming debut album, Years, is a ‘we’ve-been-broken-up-a-long-
Laura Colwell and Stephen Salisbury formed the band while working long hours in director Terrence Malick’s editing rooms, practising in the office whenever Malick was out of town.
They worked with Dan Duszynski (Cross Record; Loma) and fellow Malick alum Will Patterson (Sleep Good) on their first set of demos before solidifying the current line up of Michael Bain on guitar, Sarah Schultz on drums, and Justin Harris on bass.
I love the fact that Tony Presley of the label was living above the studio at the time and first heard Sun June through the floorboards. He contacted the band soon after. Check out the video for the first single ‘Young’, those warm and spacious melodies will keep drawing you back. They know how to make great music and I’m pretty sure, if this song had been out at the time of High Fidelity, it would have made his top 5 list…
Sun June will be playing SXSW 2018 ahead of the release of their debut LP Years, coming June 15. A US summer tour will follow.
