Austin-based singer songwriter Eliza Gilkyson has just launched a Kickstarter pre-order campaign for her new album Secularia, currently in production and due out in the summer of 2018.
Secularia, the follow up to 2014’s Grammy-nominated The Nocturne Diaries, is a collection of songs, both new and old, born from a lifetime of searching for meaningful spirituality without the constraints of traditional religious beliefs. The stories of fall and redemption in these songs are less about a heaven and hell than they are about the very human nature of losing and finding ourselves, as individuals and as a society.
Eliza revisited some of her favourite songs from over the years that fit the theme, wrote new material, and unearthed two stellar poems written by her grandmother, Phoebe, who co-wrote with Eliza’s dad, folksinger Terry Gilkyson, in the 1950’s.
The music in Secularia goes wherever the story dictates, from bluegrass and orchestral to what Eliza has termed “indie folk”, all under the watchful eyes of producer Cisco Gilliland, who co-produced her previous two albums.
Eliza has already recorded a haunting piece with the Tosca Quartet and captured duets with friends Shawn Colvin and her dearly-missed friend and cohort Jimmy LaFave. There is also a soulful rendition of a Gilkyson-penned tune in production featuring gospel singer Sam Butler, who worked off and on with The Blind Boys of Alabama.
The list of stellar musicians includes Chris Maresh (Eric Johnson), Warren Hood, Kym Warner (The Green Cards), the internationally renowned Tosca String Quartet (David Byrne, Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt), Andre Moran, Mike Hardwick (Jon Dee Graham, Charlie Sexton), Betty Soo and more.
The Kickstarter Campaign includes some great rewards including CD, Vinyl, The Red House Records Collection, Full Discography, Song Sponsor Package and more. Click here to access the campaign
