Time & Tradition is a fantastic weekend series of concerts, storytelling and talks exploring the concept of time through traditional and contemporary folk music and ritual and seasonal customs, as part of Kings Place’s Time Unwrapped programme from 16 – 18 Mar 2018.
Folk song – music of the people – is an essential document of social change, reflecting moments in time, continuity and evolution through the generations via its oral transmission. In contemporary forms, it is also often a powerful tool for social justice.
Time & Tradition’s opening concert on Fri 16 Mar features Storytelling in Song with award-winning singer and writer Chris Wood offering his unique bird’s eye filter on modern society and from a new generation of storytelling writers, Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith, whose repertoire spans traditional and self-penned songs of the times.
‘Chris Wood might be the Ken Loach of songwriting. Very political, but at the same time full of compassion, and he grows sharper and more acute with each passing album. He’s good, quite probably the very best we have today, and we need him more than ever.’ fRoots Magazine
Martin & Eliza Carthy headline a Generations Concert on Sat 17 Mar in a joyous ‘arms wide open’ father and daughter partnership and living, breathing example of how traditional music filters through bloodlines.
Eliza is nominated, with her Wayward Band, for two 2018 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards: Best Group and Best Album.
Sun 18 Mar night sees Peggy Seeger and Roy Bailey head up a Touch On The Times concert, also featuring Ewan McLennan and Grace Petrie in a concert exploring social history down the years through the filter of song.
Daytime events include an array of mixed media events, from illustrated talks to storytelling, as well as showcasing several outstanding new traditional music performers, including BBC Folk Awards 2018 Horizon-Award nominee, modern-day Outway Songster, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne as well as former nominee Rosie Hood.
