Santiago is the title track from Amit Dattani’s forthcoming debut album (released on 4th March 2018), recorded and produced by Gavin Monaghan over the course of a week in August 2017. The accompanying video was directed, photographed and edited by Marley Starskey Butler. We’re looking forward to hearing more. Don’t miss his album launch tour dates (details are below).
Amit shared the following about the song:
The song is named after the title character from Hemmingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, a story about an ageing and unlucky fisherman who finally (after 84 days of trying) catches a big beautiful fish which he ties to the side of his boat, only for it to then get eaten by sharks, leaving just its’ backbone behind. It served as a useful metaphor for music when I read it – finding a song or music, for it to then slip away. At the time I was struggling with a touch of writer’s block, some niggling hand pain and a bit of self-doubt. Santiago was the first song to break through all of that for me and proved the catalyst for further songs to flow which all eventually came together around my debut album.
This is my first solo outing, having played as part of a variety of folk/blues outfits over the past 10 years. The whole thing was recorded live and without any overdubs, just voice and guitar – it was an intense but fruitful week!
Santiago is released on 4th March 2018
