February 2nd sees the return of folk-rock group False Lights featuring Sam Carter and Jim Moray with their new album Harmonograph. Their 2015 release Salvor was one of the most highly anticipated albums that year with FRUK declaring “this is the real deal and in its own unique way a masterpiece”. Sam and Jim are joined by virtuoso melodeon and fiddle duo Tom Moore and Archie Churchill-Moss (of Moore Moss Rutter), dub-tinged bassist Barnaby Stradling (Eliza Carthy, Blowzabella) and drummer Stuart Provan (Luke Sital-Singh).
The songs on their new album came together during a week-long log cabin retreat in Lincolnshire and we have the pleasure of premiering their video for William Glenn which is also our Song of the Day.
Jim shared the following on the song: “This was one of the first folk songs that Sam learned, from the recording by Nic Jones. It’s also known as Sir William Gower and plays on the common superstition that holding guilt could cause storms. When at sea, the only solution to this was to find the guilty party and throw him or her over the side of the ship. Our version has lyrics compiled from a few sources including Nic Jones and Tony Rose, and it was one of the final tracks to come together for the album.”
