Sailing Stones is the musical moniker of singer songwriter Jenny Lindfors. Jenny is half Irish/half Swedish, and she is now based in Bristol, UK. Following previous singles The Blazing Sun and Telescopes, Jenny recently released her new single She’s A Rose, ahead of her EP of the same name that will be released in February 2018. Watch her performing She’s A Rose below (also our Song of the Day), recorded live at J&J Studios and filmed by Karlos Aguilar and Sam Hardie.
With a name taken from the sailing stones of Death Valley in California (rocks that move across landmasses at a snail’s pace, seemingly of their own accord) and a fittingly meticulous attention to detail, the music of Sailing Stones is both elegiac and mesmerizing. Inspired by a quote from the Cuban writer Anaïs Nin, “the risk to remain tight in a bud became more painful than the risk it took to blossom ”, She’s A Rose is a lyrical narrative which explores the pain of transformation that goes with the overcoming of a difficult life experience, and musically this is reflected by a darker, more cinematic quality than the previous singles. As well as classic soundtrack influences from the likes of Blade Runner and Paris, Texas and heroes such as Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac, there’s also some deft synth work, intricate vocal layers and glacial tones that aren’t a million miles away from the work of modern trailblazers such as Colleen and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith , and post-soul, jazz-infused melodies and a wind accompaniment that recalls tUne-yArds.
The She’s A Rose EP is musically a product of Jenny becoming very much a part of the ever vibrant and flourishing music scene in Bristol, and to illustrate this the She’s A Rose single features notable Bristolian guests including Jake McMurchie (sax) and Pete Judge (trumpet) from award-winning nu jazz band Get The Blessing . Jenny invited drummer to the stars Daisy Palmer (Goldfrapp/Rae Morris/Vaults ) to perform on the song, and Jenny performed the vocals, piano and mellotron. Jenny produced it and then passed it on to be mixed by local musical prodigy Stew Jackson, the writer/producer/ multi-instrumentalist for both the previous and upcoming LPs from Massive Attack.
With airplay from radio titans such as Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson on 6Music, support across the blogosphere, and regular touring across the UK, it seems things are ever on the up for one of the UK’s most exciting new musical talents.
