Our Song of the Day comes via a new video for The Gulley from that inventive contemporary folk duo India Electric Co. It opens their new EP, Seven Sisters which is not only their folkiest release to date but also a superb showcase of the duo’s talents which has them at their most inventive. Their best release yet.
The Gulley fuses words from William Mee’s 19th-century poem Alice Gray with the 3/2 hornpipe Rusty Gulley (featured in Henry Atkinson’s 1694 manuscript – one of the earliest surviving fiddle manuscripts).
Seven Sisters is the second in an EP trilogy contrasting country and city themes. It was produced with assistance from EFDSS (English Folk Dance and Song Society) Creative Bursary scheme, fuses folk backdrops with unique arrangements using everything from fiddle to prepared piano and sub-bass accordion.
The spellbinding six-track release uses traditional instruments and tunes in reimagined ways and is the latest calling card of the Devon-born, London-based duo comprising stand-out vocalist Cole Stacey and superb multi-instrumentalist Joseph O’Keefe.
Seven Sisters is a glorious melting pot – exploring traditional music from England and Scotland from Northumbrian jigs to Scottish ballads – tunes and words spanning three centuries. Recorded in the National Trust’s Sutton House in Hackney (a 16th-century merchant’s house and one of the oldest buildings in London’s East End) with vocals recorded in an empty Devonshire home this is newly minted traditional music with a deep-rooted country imprint.
It’s out now on the Shoelay record label, distributed by Proper Music.
