Just over a year ago now we shared the news of a change in the line-up of Scottish band Salt House. Singer Songwriter Jenny Sturgeon joined Ewan MacPherson (Shooglenifty) and violist/fiddler Lauren MacColl (RANT) to complete the new lineup and they quickly began working on new songs including Old Shoes and The Road Not Taken, a Robert Frost poem Lauren set to music.
They have now confirmed that they will be releasing their brand new album ‘Undersong‘ with a series of album launch shows kicking off with Celtic Connections on January 27th. See all album launch dates below which include Inverness and London.
Clearly, a lot of thought and love has been put into this album which even on preview shouts of artistic depth and quality. It was recorded on the Hebridean island of Berneray, in a stunningly-restored Telford Church during July and was produced by Andy Bell. Watch their new preview video below which features an extract of Staring at Stars.
That same quality and thought that was given to the sound are extended to the artwork. The band commissioned Visit Scotland ambassador Ellis O’Connor to do the beautiful album cover artwork. Ellis lives on the Outer Hebridean Island of North Uist and her work often seeks to challenge the observer’s “assumptions about the natural environment” and to “evoke a change in awareness or sense of individual responsibility for environmental issues.”
The album is a collection of ten songs, many from their own writing, and some new settings of old words. Undersong is available to pre-order now from their online shop in CD and digital format, along with limited edition lyric sheet prints by ‘Ink and Wool’.
