Watch the new music video for the beautifully moving ‘Kansas City, MO‘ from Minnesota indie-folk band Humbird. The song features on their latest EP Where Else which you can order via Bandcamp here. While this song may have landed in Humbird songwriter Siri Unlin’s lap overnight, you can’t deny the rich experiences and young wisdom that helped find these words. The words are both beautiful and a reminder of the part we all play in determining our fate…”I can’t count on you, but you’ve been left to me”.
Siri Undlin of Humbird shared the following:
“Written in the midst of 2017’s social climate, “Kansas City, MO” is one of those songs that seemed to land in my lap. Waking abruptly at 2 am, I struggled to find a pen and paper and ended up writing every single word, as it is still sung, into my iPhone notes app. The biggest challenge that night, and in the process of arranging and recording the song since then, has been getting out of the song’s way.
“The video came out of a collaboration with photographer, Peter Jamus. As a friend and fan of his work, I asked if he might have b-roll footage from trips and adventures in the USA that could bring the vast, beautiful and contradictory nature of America into the soundscape of a 3-minute video. Agreeing to the idea, Jamus took the project one step further by enlisting the help of 6 other photographers around the country, compiling and editing the shots into a traveling landscape.”
In 2014, Undlin undertook a year’s travel through Northern Europe as part of a fellowship, drawing lasting inspiration from Norse mythology, Sami animism and joiks, the Welsh countryside, Paleolithic cave paintings, old world lutherie, and frozen Icelandic landscapes. If this is the resulting wisdom then we should all travel more…
