Gwenifer Raymond is a Welsh multi-instrumentalist, originally from Cardiff, now based in Brighton. She’s just signed to Tompkins Square, a label that, although not restricted to American Primitive guitarists, does have some of the best guitar players out there on its roster. Josh Rosenthal who runs the label has impeccable taste so when this one landed in our inbox I knew to expect something good…it went straight beyond my expectations. Watch Gwenifer performing Sometimes There’s Blood which has just been released as a single. Outstanding!
Gwenifer describes her music as sparse and sometimes Gothic American Primitive instrumentals drawn from the roots music of Mississippi and Appalachia. Influenced by the likes of Skip James, John Fahey, Roscoe Holcomb and John Hurt. She began playing guitar at the age of 8.
We’re looking forward to hearing more, in the meantime grab this single via Bandcamp here: https://tompkinssquare.bandcamp.com/track/sometimes-theres-blood
