For their latest video, the Paula Boggs Band provide their own take on Bon Iver‘s Holocene on which the listener hears every lyric and instrument. The choreography in the video by Aleta Hayes enhances the magic of the song and heightens the message of Holocene as you’ve never before.
They shared the following “we are incredibly excited about the release of the Holocene video to support our new album, “Elixir, The Soulgrass Sessions.” It starts with why Paula Boggs Band chose to cover Bon Iver’s beautiful song in the first place. We saw an opportunity to “soulgrass” “Holocene” by using only acoustic instruments and Trina Shoemaker produced and mixed it to enable the listener to hear every lyric and feel its intimacy. The song’s words are mysteriously poetic, and that landscape invites each listener to travel his or her unique pathway. We wanted the video to enhance that listener journey. So unlike earlier music videos where we essentially wove a storyline into the band’s performance of a song, here we chose the medium of dance. Dance is innately freeing and the choreography of Stanford University’s Aleta Hayes, her use of dancers ranging in age from 14 to 60 and their racial and ethnic diversity amplify the universal message of “Holocene” — the profound realization that our time here on earth is both “large” and “small.”
