Fuzzy Jones is an award winning singer-songwriter and the queen of Leeds based Junk Shop Folk. She conjures vivid urban tales of everyday life and her lyrics draw you in around melamine tables and kitsch faded orange cafes. Today, we have the pleasure in sharing her new video for her new single Blue Jean (no. 45) (September 22nd digital, 29th vinyl). I jumped at the opportunity to share this video, that voice is enough to brighten any day, maybe even a resistance movement…
Fuzzy shared the following: “Blue Jean (No. 45) is a delicately political comment on the current world climate. I wrote it to help myself feel a little less powerless and to maybe encourage a small revolution within the listener. I am also encouraging the use of the hashtag #UpRiseWithMe to start a resistance movement. The No. 45 refers to the current…erm US ‘president’ and funnily enough it goes well with the vinyl release, which is on 45rpm records.”
Up the revolution!
A few words from the film maker Rachael Jones:
“The song had such an uplifting and stirring affect on me that the visuals I chose I felt needed to be both striking and playful. Collage animation is a great way to subvert and express social criticism, following in the tradition of experimental filmmakers such as Gilliam, Vanderbeek and Svankmajer. Images are a combination of homemade and sourced archive photographs to create an aesthetic that is in keeping with the timeless nature of Fuzzy’s song.”
Fuzzy has cited influence from 1960s and 70s musicians, such as Bobbie Gentry, Grace Slick, Julie Driscoll, David Bowie, Serge Gainsbourg, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Nancy Priddy, Jimmy Webb, Scott Walker and Dusty Springfield, and Jazz greats like Billie Holiday, through to contemporary chamber pop and alt-folk artists like Dawn Landes, St Vincent, My Brightest Diamond, Patrick Watson and Father John Misty. And her guilty pleasure? Barbra Streisand.
Blue Jean is out on digital and vinyl only, on September 22nd and 29th and Fuzzy will be appearing on the following dates:
August 26, Manchester Pride
September 10, Saltaire Festival
