Watch the latest video from Holy Moly & The Crackers with their cover of the Cold War Kids song, ‘Hospital Beds’. The song will feature on the B-side of their new ‘Let Go’ single due to drop on October 6th via Pink Lane Records ahead of their November tour (details below).
It was recorded in Loft Studios, Newcastle, straight onto tape machine. The session was produced by the band’s long-term friend and peer James Nicholls (The Buffalo Skinners). It is the perfect antidote to the contemporary and high production of Let Go; it is a more intimate and personal portrayal of Ruth and the band. “We wanted to capture the live warmth of analogue recording”. The video was made by upcoming North East filmmaker/photographer Jonny Sabiston. Again his aim was to capture the intimacy of the recording process.
Ruth chose this song to record because it was one of the first songs she learnt on piano, just after she was diagnosed with arthritis at the age of 15. She has since become dependant on a wheelchair to get around. The song has obvious personal meaning for her —
“When I first heard the song, I cried. I think it was the first step in coming to terms with the fact I’d just been told I’d be stuck with a degenerative illness for the rest of my life. It’s an honest song, which I love, it makes no promises but it also comments on the randomness of being an ill person: the conversations you end up having, the people you end up meeting. Sometimes my disability can be a blessing and this song really captures that.”
