Since posting this article the following message was sent out by The Shee’s management:
We are very sorry to announce that our October tour will no longer be taking place. We were due to play at Nettlebed Village Club, Pitville Pump (Cheltenham), MAC Birmingham and ARC Stockton on Tees, but as two of our band members are currently dealing with serious health issues – Olivia is current undergoing chemotherapy, while Rachel is just out of surgery – we have decided not to go ahead on this occasion. Though we have looked at ways to continue with deps, we just don’t think we can do the gigs without two integral members of our team. We will be back on the road next year, and would like to thank the venues for being so understanding of the situation. For all those that had bought tickets, please do get in touch with the respective venue. With love, The Shee x
The Shee celebrated their tenth anniversary with their Continuum project on which the six members of the band (Shona Mooney, Rachel Newton, Olivia Ross, Laura-Beth Salter, Amy Thatcher, Lillias Kinsman-Blake) each approached a folk music hero to write an original piece of music ahead of their premiere at Celtic Connections in 2016. On the run-up to the premiere, Folk Radio UK featured a special guest article from each member of the band to talk about their chosen folk heroes who were:
Andy Cutting
Brian Finnegan
Karine Polwart
Martin Simpson
Kathryn Tickell
Chris Wood
Each article was very revealing and one even included a comic strip, you can read them here. The project also included an album which was released in September 2016 which Neil McFadyen reviewed for Folk Radio UK. He described it as an “enthralling project that celebrates the power of collaboration, a shared love of traditional music and The Shee‘s ten years as a major force in folk music” (read the full album review here). Neil was also lucky enough to catch the Celtic Connections Premiere, his live review declared “this is sure to go down as one of the most memorable performances of Celtic Connections 2016.”
As they say, all good things must come to an end, so if you’ve yet to catch them live, then this is your final chance. The Shee have announced four celebratory final gigs which are detailed below:
