Stumbling around Twitter can turn up some wonderful gems, and I came across this one today featuring Liz Hanks on Cello and Michael Walsh on flute performing Tribute to Peadar O Donnell, a tune composed by Donal Lunny and performed originally by Moving Hearts (from The Storm 1985, on Tara Music).
Both Liz and Michael are highly regarded Sheffield-based musicians. Michael was a 2016 finalist in the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal Competition in Cork, amongst his many other merits he’s also a former All Britain Senior Flute Champion and has tutored at The University of Sheffield, Whitby Folk Week, Trip to Birmingham Trad Fest and The Leeds Irish Gathering.
Liz is a director of the ‘Up North Session Orchestra’ and is very much in demand as a session musician. Her many album credits include the likes of Paul Heaton (The Beautiful South), Thea Gilmore and she also featured on Richard Hawley’s last album, Hollow Meadows (who is also from Sheffield). She has performed on music for adverts, film soundtracks and radio; for eminent musicians including Smokey Robinson, Edwyn Collins and Kate Rusby; and at music festivals and major concert halls across the country.
