For our Song of the Day, we head to The Royal in Dungworth, Sheffield where Jack Rutter performs the folk song Young Susan on Board of a Man-of-War. He tells us that he found the song in Frank Kidson’s Traditional Tunes book “while rifling for songs in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library at Cecil Sharp House. Apparently the song was ‘much thought of among the seafaring classes round about Hull.’”
In the song young Susan disguises herself as a sailor “to cross the raging seas for love”. But does all end well? You’ll have to listen to find out. The song features on Jack’s debut solo album Hills due for release on October 3rd (Order it here).
The Royal is also where Soundpost put on many folk music gigs and you can catch Jack and Chshire born folk singer Molly Evans on 16th September, you can buy tickets here. Molly also has a new album out, Deep Time and Narrow Space on which she has adapted and recorded new settings of Alan Garner’s collected tales, stories and poems into songs texturally and melodically inspired by the English folk song tradition. They will be great to see together.
They both recently featured in our Folk Show: Singing from the Floor Episode 2 which you can listen to here. Jack is also on a double headline tour with Greg Russell whose latest album Inclined to be Red is a Featured Album of the Month. Tour dates are below.
