At the beginning of this year the Barbican Centre Music Library in London ran an exhibition to celebrate the history of the oldest truly independent record label in the world, Topic Records. As well as a wealth of archive treasures, there was a series of concerts and interviews including one with Eliza Carthy. In between questions from Colin Irwin, Eliza performed Worcester City, which featured on her 2002 Anglicana album. On that album she was joined by the likes of Jon Boden on fiddle, John Spiers on melodeon, her father Martin on guitar and Martin Green (in his pre-LAU years) on piano and accordion. There are, like many folk songs, variants of this one including one which changes the location to Oxford City.
For this lovely session she’s joined by David Delarre on guitar.
As recently announced on Folk Radio UK, Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band are to embark on their First Major UK Tour – including London, Glasgow & Cardiff. See dates below.
