Transatlantic prog-trad five-piece Aerialists are gearing up for the September release of their debut full-length album ‘Group Manoeuvre‘. We have the pleasure in premiering ‘Gangar‘ which was filmed between takes while recording in January this year at Fiddlehead Studios on Mayne Island, British Columbia. The result is a short, fierce, one room, one shot live video, capturing the raw energy of Aerialists take on traditional Norwegian tune ‘Gangar etter Eivind Spellemann.’
Elise Boeur, fiddle, says “I learned this tune while I was studying the Hardanger fiddle in Telemark in the Norwegian mountains and taught it to rest of the Aerialists soon before we started recording in January. Our inspirations for the arrangement, in a nutshell, was a book of Norwegian troll illustrations, and the fact that Norway is, of course, the home of black metal. Our friend Trent Freeman came to the studio to capture some of what we were working on during the recording of Group Manoeuvre. We took an afternoon break and decided to record this tune just the way we rehearse – all of us in one room, with the fiddle and harp raging alongside the drums.”
With members from Canada, Scotland and the US, Aerialists draws from the wells of Nordic and Gaelic music, adding expansive post-rock textures and meticulously sculpted arrangements to create captivating, genre-defying new music.
The quintet is on tour now in British Columbia. Stay tuned on Facebook or on their website for album release tour dates in Canada and Europe, including their first UK dates in January 2018.
Group Manoeuvre is released September 19th on Fiddlehead Records.
