Armed with their All-star band ‘The Sea Lice’, Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile are set to head out on the road together on a North American tour in October/November. Earlier this year it was revealed that Kurt and Courtney had spent a week recording at North Melbourne’s Newmarket Studios together and an album will be released later this year:
As noted by Pitchfork, their live band “The Sea Lice” will feature Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), Rob Laakso (The Violators, The Swirlies, Mice Parade), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), and Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin, touring member of Sleater-Kinney and Wild Beasts).
In a statement, Barnett spoke about how the collaboration came about, “In 2014 I scored a support slot opening for Kurt at the Abbotsford Convent [outside Melbourne]. We met briefly after the show but I was a bit nervous and didn’t wanna bother him, just grateful for the gig.
“Years later we started bumping into each other on the festival circuit all around the wide world and we became friends. He hit me up when he was coming to Melbourne next and said he thought we could work together.”
Vile also revealed that Barnett’s Depreston was a personal favourite:
Whilst this has left those off the tour trail feeling a little thirsty there are no plans at the moment to extend the tour. Blame logistics as Barnett recently revealed on her Facebook:
“somewhere along the dusty road I became friends with this constant hitmaker Kurt Vile. I’ve been a huge fan of his songwriting since I first heard his album Smoke Ring For My Halo n now we’ve razzled up a special show for you..me n Kurt together on stage plus our amazing all-star band that we have called The Sea Lice. I wish we could take the tour all around the world, but due to both our intercontinental schedules, this is all we can muster for now. Album coming soon, we’ll talk about that another day. CB XO”
Some will be checking flight deals I guess.
