Watch Fall from an Eyrie, the latest video from Baltimore-based band Arbouretum which arrives just ahead of their US tour (European dates in June, see below). The song is taken from their latest album Song of the Rose, released on Thrill Jockey Records. The video was directed by Gabriel DeLoach and features footage of Ras-I Bramble who won the light-weight title from Ray Mancini, but then just as quickly lost it and fell into obscurity, mirroring guitarist/singer Dave Heumann’s lyrics:
“From an eyrie built so high
He’s falling now
Archers draw and arrows fly
Raining down
He’s soon to reach the ground”
The album is possibly something of a milestone approach for the band whose previous albums have been recorded in days rather than the weeks taken over this album with greater attention being afforded to production details in capturing the energy of their performance. It is also the first time the band has mixed with Kyle Spence at his studios in Athens, GA (Kurt Vile, Luke Roberts, Harvey Milk).
Poetic imagery features strongly on the album as their lyrics explore elements of philosophy, mysticism, redemption, and the implications of human “progress.” Songs are written in poetic form as Heumann, Arbouretum’s lyricist, prefers stories remain abstract and open rather than a more typical storytelling format, all within a more traditional song structure. The album also features a song called Rose, written in tribute to Heumann’s ancestor Richard Lovelace, a 17th-century poet who penned “The Rose.”
