New Orleans indie rock band Motel Radio found just enough time between tours to shoot a stripped-down live version of “Star Of The South”, the opening track from their sophomore release Desert Surf Films. The band teamed up with director Christian Schultz to concept, plan and shoot the one-shot video.
“We wanted to shoot a live video that sounded good, and we also wanted to add an interesting visual element to give it more depth” says Ian Wellman (vocals, guitar). “We met with Christian at our house the day before the shoot to develop a concept. He started walking around the place looking through an imaginary lens with the song blaring in the background. That’s when he pitched the idea of doing a one-shot video that captures the end of a party.”
“It’s really just a glimpse into our lives” adds Winston Triolo (vocal, guitar). “We basically called our friends on the day of the shoot and asked if they wanted to come be in a video. Inevitably it turned into a night of music and booze with friends and our cat, Chester.”
“I just show up and play drums” added Eric Lloyd (drums, vocals). “I hope my parents don’t see this.”
Motel Radio’s atmospheric, harmony-driven sound and dual frontman arrangement has demanded the attention of indie-rock and Americana fans from across the globe. Formed in New Orleans in 2015, the band has released two EPs which include a range of ambient folk croons, breezy pop hooks and everything in-between.
Since its 2015 debut, the band has taken the stage at Firefly Festival, Jazz Fest and Treefort Festival, and has supported acts such as Kurt Vile, Drive-By Truckers, Moon Taxi and Dylan LeBlanc. The band will continue to tour extensively through spring and summer of 2017 to support their EP Desert Surf Films before settling down in the Fall to record their debut record.
