Larry Grenadier opens with some lovely off-kilter bass lines before keyboardist John Medeski strikes a single elongated note which beckons in the sweet cool beats of drummer Jack DeJohnette. That just leaves guitarist John Scofield who lays down the tune you finally recognise as Bob Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna-Fall. But don’t get too comfortable, about one and a half minutes in they’ll deconstruct it and head into creative jamming territory.
These four jazzmen call themselves Hudson, named after their home of Hudson River Valley. They hooked up to celebrate Jack DeJohnette’s 75th birthday, the right time to cast your eyes back towards the good times and Woodstock. Good years Jack?
Their Hudson album drops on June 9th, 2017, just in time for the San Francisco Jazz Festival at which they’ll be making an appearance on June 6th.
