The picturesque Scottish seaside town of Helensburgh has been a popular holiday destination since Victorian times. Boasting an attractive waterfront and within easy reach of Glasgow to the east, Loch Lomond to the north, and the beautiful Gare Loch to the west; it’s little wonder the town is such a popular destination. Now Helensburgh has one more attraction to boast – in August, the Clyde coast town will host the first ever Argyll Gathering, a new music festival that promises two days of the very best Scottish music and culture.
On the weekend of 19th-20th August 2017, Argyll Gathering will showcase the best in traditional contemporary Scottish music, local food and drink, and feature interactive workshops. Headlining the festival will be Scots music supergroup Treacherous Orchestra, Runrig‘s Donnie Munro, performing live with a full band, the astounding bagpipe band Red Hot Chilli Pipers. The list of other acts confirmed reads like a who’s who of Folk Radio UK favourites, with Elephant Sessions, Mànran, Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Jarlath Henderson, Blue Rose Code, Dàimh, Fat-Suit, and Nae Plans (Adam Sutherland & Hamish Napier) all contributing to a fascinating line-up.
With community at its heart, the festival will celebrate the best of what Scotland has to offer culturally. The organisers describe the Argyll Gathering as more just a festival, but a platform for people to interact and form an artistic movement.
A community workshop tent, aimed at all ages will showcase music, art and the Gaelic language. There will be delicious food courtesy of Food From Argyll, sweet treats, a carefully selected beer and ale bar, an independent spirits bar and children’s entertainment will be on offer making the festival something for all the family to enjoy.
Helensburgh native and festival organiser James Windebank said “The one thing that I always wanted my hometown to have was a spectacular event that focussed on bringing people together to listen to great music, have a dram and really enjoy themselves as a community of people!” Windbank and co-curator Nick Lawrie bring together a wealth of experience covering world-wide cultural events.
With its beautiful Clyde coast setting, a community at its heart, the very best Scottish music and the added attraction of the finest Scottish food, drink and art; Argyll Gathering 2017 is set to become one of Scotland’s most memorable annual festivals.
