Today Yep Roc will release the Digital Deluxe version of the Limited Edition CD of Tift Merritt’s Stitch of the World which was released earlier this year to rave reviews.
The deluxe version features three bonus tracks. “Stitch of the World” and “Something Came Over Me” are acoustic duet versions of the album tracks featuring Sam Beam and “Day He Died” is a previously unreleased song.
Listen and share “Day He Died”
“The night J.J. Cale died, I made a list of the what was lost when he left. His laugh, his touch. How he smoked, his struggles, the lines in his hands. How he got a guitar to make a tone just so” explains Tift.
“We live in a time where taking pictures of a place is somehow equivalent to knowing a place intimately, but that’s a lie. What we do have the privilege of knowing intimately is the first hand, off hand of our own days. Regrets, skinned knees, what we tell ourselves. Where did J.J. Cale go in his vulnerable moments and where is that place now? When a mark dissolves, there is no remembering it perfectly, no matter how carefully memorized in mind. All of that first hand fell through the hands of the world when J.J. Cale died. I wish I had known him. Only a blackbird knows where he is now. “
Stitch of the World, Merritt’s sixth studio album was written on a friend’s farm in Marfa, Texas, at Merritt’s California cabin and in New York City in the wake of several major changes in her life. The album was recorded in Los Angeles while Merritt was six months pregnant, after which she relocated to her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.
