HAV (a Danish word for sea) is singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Alex Ross, multi-instrumentalist /producer/ambient sound guru Jonathan Bidgood, and bass player Ian ‘Dodge’ Paterson.
The three met 20 years ago and have been taking time out from other projects to meet up, drink whisky and play music together ever since. We have the pleasure in premiering their video for their new single Loch Tay Boat Song, taken from their forthcoming album Inver which is a Gaelic word meaning ‘a confluence of rivers’. The album is released on 5 May 2017 via Folkwit Records.
HAV’s arrangement of the traditional Loch Tay Boat Song reimagines a conversation between two lovers whose time together is slipping away. Featuring Beccy Owen (Joy Atlas) the song sits at the heart of the album Inver and both the song and the album gently examine how tides and confluences of water carry things to you and take them from you.
The song was recorded in Edinburgh at Banana Row studios, with additional sessions in Newcastle and the remote Moray fishing village of Cullen, where most of the album was captured and where Alex (HAV’s multi-instrumentalist and singer) has spent much of his family life.
The band has slowly distilled 20 years of friendship and passion for folk music, field recording, electronic and classical composition. Listen closely, and you’ll hear field recordings of the beaches, caves, harbours and waters along the Moray coastline, made into playable instruments that create a unique sound world for the songs and tunes on Inver.
Inver is released on 5 May via Folkwit Records.
