As an exclusive premiere, Maz O’Connor has shared her video for Extraordinary, her new single. Like her beautifully choreographed video for Skin Maz has continued her pattern of a music video featuring all women.
Maz came up with the concept for the video, photography and direction is by Owen Horsley and Martin Bassindale. It stars Evelyn Miller and various friends of Maz’s. Amazingly, it was all made on a £0 budget in and around Trafalgar Square.
Maz shared the following with us about the song and video:
“The song ‘Extraordinary’ is my latest single, written at the end of 2016. It came from a feeling that our generation (Generation Y, Millennials, whatever we are) have been told we’re special…told we can do whatever we want with our lives…but the reality of course that the system is rigged, and you’ve got to work for people older and richer than you and rent from people older and richer than you…I wanted to give voice to that shock and dissatisfaction, of dreams colliding with reality. I suppose it’s about capitalism and how it dehumanises us.
“The video was an idea I had about somebody breaking out of that and trying to get free and reclaim wildness. Albeit in quite a ridiculous way. I wanted it to feel like a liberation, but ultimately, kind of futile. We filmed it early in the morning around Trafalgar Square. Evvy Miller, the actor playing the Lion, was amazing; she was totally happy to go for it and dance around in a lion onesie in front of all these tourists, and have fun with it.”
Extraordinary is out now and available via iTunes.
