Watch Dave Burn, the former vocalist and guitarist of alt-country band ahab, performing Fine Company, the opening track of his debut solo album ‘Arizona’ due for release on 1st March 2017. The video session was recorded live at London’s Crypt Studios.
By turns autobiographical, celebratory and reflective, Dave Burn’s songwriting hits a high on ‘Arizona’, an album that cements Dave as an artist in his own right.
After a whirlwind few years on the road with award-winning band ahab and their subsequent 2013 split, Dave kept his feet and heart firmly in music by writing songs with various artists, including Danny and the Champs, Katzenjammer, Danni Nicholls, Kirsten Adamson and more recently Blair Dunlop.
Having built up a new body of work, Dave then felt compelled to produce his solo album, and hence ‘Arizona’ was born.
The making of Arizona in Dave’s own words –
“I took a long job working on a documentary in the Yukon filming gold miners. I came back with a broken foot and a slipped disc in my back but fortunately enough cash to rent a studio, round up some great musicians and make the album I’ve always wanted to make, which I’m very proud of.”
Having strong family ties with the U.S; from a young age, Dave spent many weeks each year with his grandfather in Arizona where he was immersed in the vast and cinematic vista of the sun-soaked landscape, imprinting its majestic, yet rugged beauty on his development as a musician.
This album is the distillation of those experiences seen through the eyes of a talented songwriter and gifted musician. As the saying goes, Arizona has always been a place for rebels and risk takers, and Dave Burn doesn’t disappoint. Amongst these songs, he opens his heart and takes stock of himself and finds an ocean of universal emotions that we can all relate to.
‘Arizona’ was produced by Fred Abbot (Noah and the Whale/ Orphan Colours) and co-produced by Graham Knight (Orphan Colours, Simple Kid) and Rob Heath (Corb Lund/Justin Townes Earle). All three musicians also contributed to the record.
Backing vocals come courtesy of Kirsten Adamson, Seebs (ahab/ Orphan colours) Luke Price (ahab) and Neil Burn (Dave’s father).
