Just two weeks on from the release of single Hold And Stay and its enigmatic video, the globetrotting Fabrizio Cammarata has followed up with a new single, In Your Hands, accompanied by another cryptic video.
Fabrizio has travelled far and wide with his well-received album Rooms, opening shows for many A-list stars including Ben Harper, Iron & Wine, Patti Smith, Daniel Johnston and Hindi Zahra as well as impromptu nocturnal jam sessions with Damien Rice and completing many successful tours across Europe. Following this fruitful period, Fabrizio is now gearing up to release his new EP, titled after this track, In Your Hands.
The soundtrack of Fabrizio Cammarata’s life has featured the greats such as Bob Dylan, Fabrizio De André and Nick Drake, these sounds and stories mixed in with his own experiences and adventures growing up in the idyllic beauty of Palermo, Sicily. Fabrizio has drawn much creative inspiration from his travels across the globe, especially in Mexico and all around the Mediterranean Sea. His non-musical muses include the photography of Francesca Woodman, the poetry of Garcia Lorca, the work of film-maker Wim Wenders and the butoh dance aesthetics of Kazuo Ohno. All of these inspirations can be felt in the beautifully shot new video.
“If you think about it, hands are the only part of our body that can be abstracted from their context, to the extent of becoming beings of their own” says Fabrizio. “A hand can walk, for example. How many times have we played this game as kids? In the video, I wanted to explore the possibilities of this abstraction: to see a hand as a unit of its own, to forget to whom it belongs. Hands with their own lives… the concept of hand-ness”.
The concept for the video was developed with award-winning director Manuela Di Pisa and acclaimed visual artist Ignazio Mortellaro and dance theatre performers Chiara Aloisio and Federica Aloisio were brought in to create the hypnotic hand choreography. All of them live in downtown Palermo, just a few minutes walk from each other, when they are not travelling across the world with their art.
Fabrizio explains further his fascination with hands – “I’m fascinated with hands and the way that they communicate so much. There’s a universal sign language we’re not conscious about, but it’s there. You can fall in love in the beauty of a single gesture”.
In Your Hands and previous single Hold and Stay are the first new musical offerings in five years. Fabrizio Cammarata is currently working on an upcoming full album, On The Shadows. His debut album with his band The Second Grace and his later works Rooms and Skint And Golden have been received with unanimous critical praise. With the Berlin based filmmaker and Wim Wenders collaborator Luca Lucchesi he’s been working on an odyssey road-movie around forthcoming solo single La Llorona. Inspired by his passion for Latin American culture he has worked on a book and record depicting the life of legendary Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, entitled Un Mondo Raro with fellow singer-songwriter Dimartino, to be released in January 2017.
With an ever-growing circle of fans across Europe and a debut UK tour confirmed for November including 2 dates with Jesca Hoop, it is only a matter of time before music lovers north of the channel start tuning in en masse to one of Europe’s best-kept musical secrets.
