There is plenty of new music in our latest mix as well as tracks that are not so new but will be unfamiliar to many. There are many captivating voices and harmonies throughout from Neil McSweeney, Lucy Farrell and M G Boulter who are Gluepot to the unmistakable sound of Wildwood Kin on Seth Lakeman‘s latest album. We also have Freschard with music from her brand new album Sunday Night and a welcome return from Jess Morgan with music from her latest offering Edison Gloriette as well as Thisell who is back with ii the second in what is to be a trilogy recorded at an abandoned school in southern Sweden.

Louise Bichan – Quoyburray
In 2013, Orkney fiddler and photographer Louise Bichan embarked on a unique musical and sentimental journey, between her native northern isles and coast-to-coast Canada, in the footsteps of her late paternal grandmother Margaret, nee Tait (1925-2008). The result – originally premiered at Orkney Folk Festival in 2015, and now captured as an album – is Out of My Own Light, a suite of beautifully wrought, brilliantly captivating chamber-folk compositions, inspired by Bichan’s travels and wider family recollections, together with Margaret’s own diaries and correspondence. Due for release 2 December 2016.
Cassie And Maggie – Hangman
Born to a family with a rich musical heritage and raised in Nova Scotia, a province steeped in musical culture and traditions, the girls have used their unique up bringing as a springboard for their own brand of Celtic Roots music. Equally at home playing tunes passed down through generations of musicians, as seamlessly weaving themes from the Moonlight Sonata into sets of sure fire reels, Cassie and Maggie are turning heads wherever they go.The Willow Collection is released 4 November and they have a one UK show this year on 1 November at Green Note, London. More here.

Birthh – Prelude for the Loveless
BIRTHH is 19 year-old Alice Bisi from Florence, Italy. ‘Born In The Woods’, is her first album which was debuted at SXSW this year. Oh! Alice, was her first solo project as an intense, emotive teenager with an instinctive folk sensibility. A stormy adolescence re-shaped her song-writing and she began to experiment and search for something altogether more dynamic. You can hear clearly in this stunning track.
Vanessa Anne Redd – Invisible Strings
From Behind the Wall (released Oct 7th) – the debut solo offering from London-based, half-German singer-songwriter and producer Vanessa Anne Redd. Having previously released albums as part of Rubicks, and Six Years, touring with John Foxx and Gary Numan, Behind The Wall sees a departure from earlier electronic endeavours, offering up more pastoral soundscapes.
Tim Schmidt – Golden Arizona
An older favourite from YaYa River which we played a lot back in 2011. How time flies.
Freschard – me & the boys
From Sunday Night, a brand new release from the wonderfully charismatic and charming Freschard. Her regular partner Stanley Brinks also supports her on this release which you can purchase on Bandcamp right here.
Jack Omer – Poor Little Son Of Mine
From The Music of Joanna, released back in 2013. Available via Amazon.
Jess Morgan – Still In Fashion
Yes, Jess Morgan releases Edison Gloriette on 21st October, her fourth full-length record, a tumbler of unfancied folk-roots music, with heart, passion and gusto. She just keep s sounding better and better, as you can testify on this track.
Thisell – The Sun Sets In The Weeds
From ii, the second album from Swedish singer and songwriter Peter Thisell. Supported by a cast of talented friends, Thisell’s music invites the listener on a sweeping journey through cinematic soundscapes, where elements of traditional Swedish folk songs echo in an atmosphere of dark Americana. Buy it via our friends at Jellyfant.
In the Goodship – Libra
This arrived in the Folk Radio UK inbox this week. In the Goodship are a Cardiff-based band who are currently writing and recording an album in the rural Transkei in South Africa. Due to return to the UK early next year. We’ll have more on them soon!
Darren Hayman – Knowlton
Finally, another FRUK favourite, this is from Darren’s Thankful Villagers Volume 1.
A Thankful Village is a village in Britain where every soldier returned alive from World War I. Darren Haymanvisited each of the 54 Thankful Villages and, focussing on village life, made a piece of music and a short film for every one. Some take the form of instrumentals inspired by the location, some are interviews with village residents set to music, others are new songs with lyrics or found local traditional songs.
Thankful Villages Volume 1 is the first (of three) volume of the project and contains the first 18 villages that Darren visited during 2014/15. The pieces do not necessarily refer to the Great War, rather they portray the village and it’s communities at many points in history.
