We have a rather special video premiere today from O’Hooley & Tidow who were our Artists of the Month in August following the release of their latest album Shadows. The video is for Small, Big Love and was made by the multi-talented Marry Waterson whose work has featured many times on Folk Radio UK. Her animations, like her music, is unique and rich in detail and colour. Belinda shared some background about the video and song (see below) which was written by Kathryn Williams, as she says Kathryn can turn something “ordinary into something magical”. In this instance, all three stars aligned perfectly.
The rather wonderful singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams wrote ‘Small, Big Love’ and performed it at our wedding earlier in the year. It was the first time that we’d heard the song and loved all the imagery that she used to describe our love for each other, including a slow train, turbines, trees, net curtains and cups of hot tea… Kathryn has the ability to turn the ordinary into something magical. Recently, I was chatting to Kathryn about making a video for the song and she suggested we got in touch with Marry Waterson. We had seen some of Marry’s animations before; notably the one she made for The Furrow Collective and was really impressed. Heidi chatted to Marry and we sent her the song, which she fell in love with. Marry’s ideas and energy for creating something quirky and wonderful brought the idea of two individual birds to represent me and Heidi, that when together, form an owl. This main theme of the animation is added to by two human forms walking in harmony together in front of a backdrop of steam engines, forests, wind turbines and even the ginger bird sat on a black cat (my personal favourite). When she showed us the video, we both sat holding hands like a couple of old ladies and cried. We’re delighted with it.
