Black Angel Drifter is the lovechild of Robert ‘Hacker’ Jessett and Anne Gilpin of Morton Valence. Their debut single is a skewed interpretation of Bob Dylan’s ‘The Man in the Long Black Coat’ for which we have the pleasure in premiering the video below:
The band pay scant regard to the original and manage to create a brooding, discordant masterpiece that Anne and Hacker croon their way through like Sonny and Cher on some very heavy medication after an even heavier night out on the railway tracks. The backdrop is a car-crash steel guitar riff that bludgeons its way through roughly 4 minutes of darkness, creating a thing of astounding beauty, the like of which you certainly won’t be hearing any time soon on drive-time radio.
The video, which was shot on an abandoned atomic weapons research facility deep in the badlands of the East coast of England – Orford Ness – not only provides a perfect visual accompaniment to the music, but also lets us into a little secret.
The man in the long black coat, is in fact… a woman.
The band will be playing live in London’s Servant Jazz Quarters on November 08.
Black Angel Drifter is released 30 September via Bastard Recordings. This will be the first and only release, catch them while you can.
