Leave a Map is the second single from Real Live Tigers‘ most recent album “Denatured.” It was originally released in 2013, but remastered earlier this year by Paul Gold (Jason Molina, Sufjan Stevens, Dirty Projectors) and released on vinyl April 15 via Keeled Scales.
This video came out of an email correspondence between songwriter Tony Presley and documentary filmmaker Brad Bores, who shot and directed “When the Bell Rings,” a documentary about 40 year-old former professional boxer Dino Wells trying to make a comeback. In February Presley was hired to drive a car from Texas to Massachusetts and detoured to Bores’ native Ohio to shoot the video in small rustbelt Ohio towns. The two spent 24 hours shooting in Findlay, Norwalk, Van Wert, and Bellevue, including scenes inside an old hotel Abraham Lincoln stayed at and a Waffle House at 3am.
The character in the video offers a round black river stone to the people he encounters and those moments are captured candidly, to record people’s first reactions. The song’s lyrics are a mixture of frustration, disappointment, and hope. Presley holds his friends and fellow artists close and urges them to “build their hidden worlds, just leave a map for us.”
Leave a Map is also our Song of the Day.
Real Live Tigers is based in Austin, Texas and has a US solo tour in September and a full band tour in October.
