A year after his critically acclaimed debut album Hoverance, Ralegh Long returns with a subtle new E.P, We Are In The Fields. This gentle, restrained E.P picks up where Hoverance left off, with woodwind and picked guitars calling to mind Nick Drake, Whiskeytown’s Pneumonia and the later albums of the Innocence Mission. “Dusk” in particular pays a debt to Nick Drake, with a beautifully cascading melody, delicately picked guitars and warm pedal steel creating a richly crafted sound with an inviting ambience.
The E.P is released digitally and as a cotton tote bag with artwork by the renowned illustrator Frances Castle who also runs Clay Pipe Music.
Set once again in the fields around his home, the E.P charts the course of a single day, with tracks named ‘Morning’, ‘Afternoon’, ‘Dusk’ and ‘Night’. The fields of the title are are known locally as ‘Webster’s Gold’, after the man who made his fortune growing wheat for biscuits to be shipped to soldiers in the Crimea. The songs obliquely touch on these stories.
