Our Song of the Day comes from Scottish singer and harpist Rachel Newton with her new video for Gura Mise Tha Fo Mhulad. The track features on her latest album Here’s My Heart Come Take It which was a Folk Radio UK Featured Album of the Month (read our review here).
The words to Gura Mise Tha Fo Mhulad are taken from ‘Folksongs and Folklore of South Uist’ by Margaret Fay Shaw and the music is based on the Tobar an Dualchais recording of Roderick MacKinnon singing ‘Chunnaic Mise mo Leannan‘, a waulking song that Rachel’s harp bass notes and her band accentuate throughout with that strong rhythmic beat. Her band consist of Mattie Foulds, Lauren MacColl and Michael Owers. The video was filmed at Caribou Recording by Somhairle MacDonald.
